Ways to Cope with COVID-19 Induced Stress

By Angela Williams April 20, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the lives of people around the world. The current global pandemic has led to widespread changes in how we live, how we interact, as well as how we work and support ourselves or our families. It is normal under these circumstances to feel anxious, worried—and even frustrated and bored. If you are worried about an uncertain future, you are not alone. Take a look at these 5 ways that you can help yourself cope with COVID-19 induced anxieties.

Start practicing basic self-care every day

You need to take care of your mental and physical health now more than ever. Establishing basic self-care routines will help you feel better, stay in good health, and keep your mind and body grounded with a routine. Basic self-care should include:

  • getting up at a reasonable hour in the morning
  • practicing good hygiene (showering, brushing teeth, etc.)
  • eating healthy
  • getting some physical exercise every day
  • going to bed at a reasonable time at night

If you have trouble keeping up with self-care, create a chart and/or calendar that you can highlight or check off when you accomplish something in your routine.

Working with a whiteboard calendar would be a great addition to your everyday activities and duties. A board on your refrigerator would be perfect for daily, weekly, and monthly activities. This Set of 3 Calendars are perfect for the entire family!

Limit your news consumption to a reasonable amount

It is very easy to feel worried and uncertain if you are constantly bombarded with articles, news, updates, what-ifs and other information about current events. It is important to stay up to date with legal measures and other important information regarding COVID-19, but you run the risk of burning yourself out mentally if you are constantly consuming news. Limit yourself to a reasonable amount of news consumption each day, such as setting aside 20 minutes to catch up on latest events, rather than letting yourself read article after article.

Focus on the things in life that you can control

An uncertain future can make you feel out of control. And while you can’t control what is happening around the world, you can ease your worries by focusing on things you can control. You can control how much you take care of yourself; you can control how much you limit interaction with others via social distancing; you can control how you spend your free time; and so on. Focusing on what you can control will help you feel less stressed about what you can’t control.

Let yourself have relaxation and fun.  Reading a book is always a recommendation practice before you go to bed.  Here is a recommendation for relaxing and reading all in one!

Practicing Mindfulness goes through exercises that are proven to help reduce stress, improve your mental health and finding peace in your overall day.

Practicing Mindfulness

It’s important to unwind and have fun as much as you reasonably can, especially if you are feeling afraid and stressed out. Letting yourself do something enjoyable will help you feel better on an emotional level, and it can even reduce physical symptoms of stress if you are experiencing them. Watch a good movie, listen to some music and dance, paint a picture—do something that makes you smile.

Reach out to others

Finally, you can reach out to others. Reaching out to friends, family, or even people on social media can help you feel less alone. We are all at home doing the same exact thing and the support is needed everywhere.  Call, FaceTime, Zoom, etc., a friend!

Remember: while the future may be uncertain, we are all in this together! In order to go through these moments smoother, we should all find ways to cope with life's new demands.
